It's a combination of bright, happy artwork that is simply exquisite, and the multitude of education experiences that are hidden in between a relatable developmentally appropriate book for babies, toddlers and up. This particular edition has a CD/multimedia component in it and makes for a deeper, early literacy learning experience that allows children to listen to the book anytime, on their own and mimic the story teller's reading. It's an awesome combo.

Feeling secure is a huge part of being a child, and here the illustrations and plot are profoundly well-executed much like Wise Brown's Goodnight Moon. Furthermore, literacy is encouraged in a new form with an audio component. This is a great tool for families whose parents are learning English or to read. However, almost anyone can benefit from listening to audiobooks as a shared experience. A WONDERFUL family activity that is an alternative to television!

Evaulation: Chicken, Pig, and Cow are toys who live is a popsicle stick barn which sadly doesn't haven't a door or a roof! The animal toys don't mind this at all-MOST OF THE TIME! But, one day when the little girl who owns them doesn't come home, instead they get a dog! without a roof his this presents a precarious situation indeed! All's well that ends well when the animals make a new friend (yup, the dog!) and even get a door on their popsicle home barn!
Kids will ABSOLUTELY love the imagination, the whimsy of ideas, and the watercolor pictures in this book! I wish I had it as a kid! Instead, I will have to bring it to my class! Not to mention it's a wonderful story about unpredictable friends and happy endings!

It's hard not to feel the fun with Olivia, even when learning concepts!

Evaluation: This is children’s title that can be directly shared with children. These books are unique because they are “touch and feel” titles that have patches of textures for different animals. This is a world book that encourages little ones to feel textile differences and explore picture-language connections. This book does a lot with a little. It is also in the sturdy board book (mouth proof) format that is small enough for little hands and fun for family playtime.

ALLIGATOR PIE VIA POETRY ONLINE

Dennis Lee
From: Alligator Pie. Toronto: Macmillan, 1974.

Alligator pie, alligator pie,
If I don't get some I think I'm gonna die.
Give away the green grass, give away the sky,
But don't give away my alligator pie.

Alligator stew, alligator stew,
If I don't get some I don't know what I'll do.
Give away my furry hat, give away my shoe,
But don't give away my alligator stew.

Alligator soup, alligator soup,
If I don't get some I think I'm gonna droop.
Give away my hockey stick, give away my hoop,
But don't give away my alligator soup.

Evaluation: If I don't get some Dennis Lee, "I don't know what I'm gonna do..."!! There is absolutely nothing I don't LOVE about this book. It's become a new read aloud staple in my monthly family literacy workshop and it makes us all giggle every time!

Rainbow Fish Opposites

Title: Rainbow Fish Opposites
Author: Marcus Pfister
Pages: 24
Price: $4.99
Publisher: North-South Books
Publisher Date: March 1, 2005
ISBN: 0735819823
Classification: Board Book

Annotation: Concepts like: Big and Little, In and Out, Up and Down, introduce themselves to the little ones here with favorite children's literary character Rainbow Fish.

Evaluation: The great thing about this little concept board book is that not only introduces developmentally appropriate concepts (and is a little board book perfect for little hands), but it's length is shorter then the main Rainbow Fish story. The first story, a hugely popular one that was turned into a television show, is very lengthy and though lengthier stories may be nice at times, this book brings back a favorite character, making new concepts higher interest for children who love Rainbow Fish and more appropriate in length for the much younger child. And in the tradition of Rainbow Fish who learns to share his rainbow scales in the first book, this tale of opposites ends in Give and Take!

Bear Snores On (Classic Board Books)

Title: Bear Snores On
Author: Karma Wilson
Price: $7.99
  • Pages: 34
  • Publisher: Little Simon
  • Publishing Date:
    • September 6, 2005
  • ISBN-10: 1416902724
  • Classification: Nursery/Board Book

  • Annotation: It's a cold, wintery night and the forest animals gather in the bears caves. But...the bear snores on. But, when he wakes up, what will happen?!
    • Evaluation: Bear Snores On is part of the Bear series from Karma Wilson. All of her books are adorable, and I highly recommend the board book versions for the littler hands. They are much more appropriate, especially since the story is so perfect for toddlers and little ones. I love that this book only teases at the scary bear, but rather gives us a teddy bear. Also, it seems to be connected to nature which nature-momma's and poppa's will LOVE!

  • Evaluation: In the typical DK fashion, this learning book about Hannukah, is a feast of pictures that will warm your heart for longer then eight days! It's small and perfect for little hands which really does make it perfect as a "first" Hannukah book. Both an early literacy triumph in word and letter recognition as well as a fun way to introduce a religion!
